It was not exactly an ideal situation for Jacob deGrom‘s first start off the injured list on Friday night. A two-hour and 42-minute rain delay and damp conditions though did not lead to any excuses from Jacob after struggling in his return as the team fell to the Brewers by a score of 10-2.

DeGrom, 30, continued his funk with his third straight start of going less than five innings. He allowed five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out seven over four innings of work.

“To go out there and do that,” deGrom said, “it’s embarrassing.” (MLB)

Friday’s loss saw deGrom’s record fall to 2-3 on the season. Over this stretch of poor starts, Jacob has allowed 14 runs over 13 innings pitched and has seen his ERA rise to 4.85 on the season.

“I think I’ll figure it out,” deGrom said. “I’ve had stretches in my career before where they haven’t been that good, and then everything gets back in line. I think it’s just getting the reps in, and taking it from the bullpen sessions and actually doing it in the game, instead of what I did tonight.”

It is hard not to believe the reigning CY Young Award winner. Almost every pitcher has had a rough patch of starts after showing much success and deGrom is too good to see this continue on for much longer and had no concerns with any physical issues after last night which was a good sign.
If all goes according to plan, deGrom’s next start will be against the Cincinnati Reds this week as he attempts to get back on track.
