Ahead of the New York Mets series opener in Philadelphia, right-handed starter Jacob deGrom addressed the media corps in response to Mets’ manager Mickey Callaway‘s and left-handed starter Jason Vargaspost-game altercation with Newsday beat reporter Tim Healey on Sunday.

DeGrom informed reporters he was speaking on behalf of his teammates and proceeded to take a captain-like role, attempting to diffuse the situation even further after general manager Brodie Van Wagenen and Callaway had already both taken their turn with the press.

“The players had a meeting today and we decided we would like one person to talk about the situation that went on. It was a tough loss yesterday […] Sometimes tensions run high. We understand we have a job to do, as does the media — you guys have a job to do. We don’t anticipate that happening again.”

“We know this is a big series. We’re playing very important baseball right now and we need to start winning. I think our main focus after having that meeting is to move forward from this, turn the page on it, and focus on this series we have with the Phillies.”
