The New York Mets were looking to end their five-game losing streak on Monday as ace Jacob deGrom took the mound. They did exactly that as deGrom recorded a quality start and the bats provided him with some rare offensive support in the team’s 7-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

DeGrom cruised during the early innings and displayed some nasty pitches along the way.

In the first, he struck out two in a perfect inning. His second strikeout came on a filthy three-pitch sequence to Freddie Freeman in which he displayed a 94 mph slider, 100 mph fastball and 85 mph curveball.

DeGrom picked up two more strikeouts in a one-hit second inning.

During the top of the third, the Mets’ offense spent an abnormally long time on the field for one of deGrom’s starts. DeGrom watched as his team scored four runs and batted around. His time in the dugout was also extended due to Braves’ starter Mike Soroka leaving the game due to injury.

Despite having to sit around longer than he is used to in most of his starts, deGrom picked up where he left off in the bottom of the third. He got the first two batters to ground out before allowing a single to Ronald Acuña Jr. He then promptly struck Ozzie Albies to end the inning.

DeGrom followed that up with a 1-2-3 fourth inning and picked up his sixth strikeout in the process.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth, deGrom had seven runs of support behind him. However, the Braves got one back to start the inning as former teammate Travis d’Arnaud took deGrom deep. It was the first home run he gave up this season and the first since September 9, 2019 when he gave up a homer to another former teammate in Wilmer Flores.

DeGrom rebounded by racking up a couple more strikeouts to bring his total of the night to eight. However, he ran into some trouble by walking Ender Inciarte, who then stole second and scored on a single by Acuña. DeGrom responded by getting Albies to strike out swinging to end the inning.

Although he struggled a little in the fifth, deGrom came back out in the sixth and got out of the inning while limiting the Braves to one single. He ended his night with a strikeout of d’Arnaud on a 99 mph fastball for his 10th strikeout of the game.

DeGrom brought the heat all game long and managed to hit 100 mph on his fastball for a career-high five times in a single start.

Overall deGrom limited the Braves to five hits, two runs and one walk on 104 pitches in his first win of the season. His season ERA currently sits at 2.12, while his WHIP sits at 0.706.
