The man who pitched on Wednesday night was reminiscent of the reigning 2018 NL CY Young award winner, Jacob deGrom. The Mets ace seemingly returned to form against the Reds with a gem of a performance in a 1-0 loss.

DeGrom, 30, looked like the pitcher we have come to know over these past few years. Jacob tossed seven scoreless innings while allowing just three hits, walking two and striking out six.

“It’s definitely a relief,” deGrom said. “Nobody wants to go out there and stink. … I felt like I was pretty close to where I want to be.” (NY Post)

Jacob took the no-decision as the offense was also reminiscent of 2018, unable to muster any support for their pitcher. Manager, Mickey Callaway liked what he saw and believes that deGrom may have turned a corner despite not having his full arsenal.

“It felt like he was back,” Callaway said. “It was very reminiscent of last year. He probably didn’t have his best stuff, but that was him.”

In his seven innings of work, deGrom threw 101 pitches, 74 of which landed for strikes. He again showed his ability to get out of some sticky situations as he did in the fourth inning with the Reds offense threatening with bases loaded but deGrom powered through with a strikeout of Tucker Barnhart in a big moment.

Mickey Callaway said it best after Wedensday’s game.

“It’s good,” Callaway said, “to see Jacob deGrom back.”
