Tuesday afternoon, Jacob deGrom was seen throwing at Citi Field from around 95-100 feet, and there’s a possibility that the two-time Cy Young Award winner could throw a bullpen session this weekend, per NY Daily News‘ Deesha Thosar.

DeGrom has been sidelined since last July with a shoulder injury and is set to opt out of his contract after the season. During the offseason though, deGrom did say that he wants to be a Met for the remainder of his career. That being said, the organization and Steve Cohen will definitely like to see where he’s at before investing nine figures in the right-hander.

On a recent podcast, Jon Heyman hinted he heard the timeline to get deGrom back was “late June.” That remains to be seen.

Getting deGrom back is crucial, given the injuries to Max Scherzer and Tylor Megill, along with the uncertainty in the rotation after Chris Bassitt, Taijuan Walker and Carlos Carrasco. The bats have woken up of late, but getting their ace back would take immense pressure off of the rest of the pitching staff, as well as the offense.

Last week, Mets general manager Billy Eppler was asked about when deGrom might return and had this to say: “We have a general sense. We’re not going to set timelines on people but more treating them as they progress through things.”

Given the fact that deGrom was seen throwing today and is on track for a bullpen session this weekend, it’s safe to assume that the Mets could get both of their aces back around the time of the All-Star break. Until then, David Peterson and Trevor Williams are going to need to step up and continue to produce for the starting rotation.
