First off, I don’t care if A-Rod makes more by himself than the entire Marlins team combined. I think all baseball players are overpaid to begin with. I love my Mets, but they are entertaining fans, not saving the world. And even though I applaud those who give their time and are involved in charity work, common sense says that they don’t need to be making millions to raise money for others. They could do that anyway. End of story.
Ok. Even though we lost Pedro before we could even say “welcome back”, Mets fans still have a lot to be thankful for. “Johan, Johan, a pitcher’s life for me!” We could not have asked for a better, more reassuring opener from him.
My bets were on Carlos Beltran for the first Mets homer of the year. Unfortunately Delgado shows no signs of returning to the hitter he once was (for example, before he was a Met) and if David Wright starts the season as he did last year, we’d be waiting a long time for that first homer. But, Ryan Church put all bets to rest tonight with his and the Mets’ first homer of the 2008 season. (For those of you actually watching tonight’s game, there were several questionable homerun calls for the Mets, including what should have been a homerun for Beltran.)
The Mets home opener is against the Phillies. How ironic. If memory serves me correctly, the home opener last year was against the Cardinals. It seems the team who spoils us is the first team we host the following year. Coincidence???
It’s a little bittersweet for me to be writing my first blog of the last regular season at Shea. While I can’t control the joyous emotions from the thought of a brand new, gorgeous, state-of-the-art stadium, I also cannot conrol the opposite emotions at the thought of no more Shea. And I know that most of you other Mets fans out there feel the same way.
