That’s just one theory that’s floating around after ESPN’s Adam Rubin posted this on Twitter:
For conspiracy theorists: Buffalo lists Monday starter as TBA (Owen on DL). That’s ZACK WHEELER day w/ B-Mets. Heard zero promotion chatter though.
We actually came to that same conclusion a couple of weeks ago when we pegged Collin McHugh for his subsequent promotion to Buffalo that followed five days later.
This might be nothing, OR Rubin could really be onto something here.
Either way let’s look at some pros and cons.
Wheeler has been on a roll in his last ten starts and has been pitching lights out. In nine of his last ten starts he’s allowed two runs or less nine times, with the only blip being a three-run stint. It’s the best stretch of pitching in his career as a pro.
Wheeler, who just turned 22, has been nothing short of sensational since arriving in the Carlos Beltran trade last summer. He has worked hard on reducing the number of walks he dishes out and his walk rate has improved greatly.
Most of the experts view him as the top prospect in the organization, an opinion I happen to agree with. He was selected to represent the Mets in the Futures Game as part of the All Star Game festivities next month.
For the season, Wheeler is 6-3 for the B-Mets with a 1.88 ERA. He has struck out 73 batters in 71 1/3 innings.
Harvey and Familia were both promoted to Triple-A with far less glamorous numbers than that, and not nearly the same Double-A service time for Harvey. So hey, why not?
Those are the pros, you want some cons? Sorry, I don’t need no steeenking cons…
