Mike Pelfrey went seven strong innings and Ike Davis had the help of some video replay to grant him a home run and the Mets won their series opener versus the Diamondbacks, 4-1

Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey looked good today, going seven innings allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out four. This is the first time Mike has managed to go more then five and one third innings this entire season, and I am sure the bullpen is thankful for that today. Pelfrey scattered his hits, but when they were hit, they stayed in the park. Pelfrey seemed composed, and facing this lineup which isn’t missing any quality hitters was a big plus. Hopefully this is a turning point for Pelfrey and he can go on  a tear the same way he did to begin last season.

The bullpen usage/abuse today was minimal, with Izzy and K-Rod making the appearances today. Izzy went one inning allowing no hits and no walks, while striking out none. The confidence in which Izzy approaches every appearance is amazing, because he goes out with his gameplan and executes it. K-Rod came out for his third save opportunity, and in typical K-Rod fashion, got an out, walked a batter, allowed him to advance into scoring position, then proceeded to strike out the next two batters, both lefties on FILTHY changeups that dove into the dirt. K-Rod’s final line was one inning, one walk and two strikeouts. His velocity was up around 93 today, which is always a welcome sign.

The Mets bats were silent for most of the game, failing to put together rallies, striking out in key spots and just not making good decisions. That changed in the seventh inning, when a David Wright walk began the inning with a bang. Ike Davis drove Wright in with what was called a double, but upon Terry Collins protest for a review, was turned into a home run, Ike’s second in two days and third on the year. The Mets would tack on two more runs in the eighth on a Carlos Beltran single, scoring Jose Reyes. Mike Nickeas got a run in when Ryan Roberts made an error.

The Mets offense was somewhat stale today, and relied on the one big hit for there chance to win. It would’ve been a shame if Pelfrey lost the game.

David Wright – 0 for 2 with two walks, a stolen base and a run. Its always good to see him walk and not strikeout.

Ike Davis – 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI, but two strikeouts looking. Its good to see his plate discipline.

Jason Bay – 1 for 4 with two strikeouts. One was in a big spot, but he will be streaky.

Ike Davis’ home run to center field
