How Many Current Mets Will Still Be Around For Amazins' Next Championship?

This exercise was done in light of the questions concerning Flores’ and Lagares’ roster spots on who is the future for the Mets and who is just passing through. The headline may sound a bit optimistic, but we are looking identify the strengths and weaknesses on the roster. These opinions are my own and not to be taken globally.

Travis d’Arnaud: Possibly.

If he performs, he will stick. He will be given the a lot of rope, but Kevin Plawecki is coming on.

Anthony Recker: Doubtful.

This spot belongs to Juan Centeno, a lefty complement that is strong defensively. Recker has some power, but doesn’t match up defensively.

Ike Davis: Doubtful.

Davis has spent time in and out of the Mets’ doghouse with his faulty hitting mechanics and his frequent complaining. Hope he can find himself because the talent is there, and those blisters because of extra batting practice, show heart.

Lucas Duda: Doubtful.

Duda wants to be a DH. Good luck Lucas.

Josh Satin: Possibly.

Satin has a professional approach to hitting and if he can learn to play the outfield, he would be a valuable bat off the bench.

Wilmer Flores: Possibly.

If he performs and his defense is sufficient, he will stick at first or second base.

Daniel Murphy: Possibly.

Murphy seems ticketed for another team, but if he can learn to turn on pitches and increase his power, it will be hard to find a better second baseman.

Ruben Tejada: Doubtful.

Tejada doesn’t offer speed, power, or elite defense. There will be another player as the starting shortstop. Maybe a backup infielder.

David Wright: Definitely.

A stud.

Juan Lagares: Definitely.

Speaking of studs, incredible defense. Struggled with the bat his first year, so has TDA, but who hasn’t? Giving him the benefit of the doubt, if he can improve to a .280 average with a solid on-base and some power, he will be a fixture.

Eric Young: Doubtful.

He’s fast, very fast. Plays a decent defensive outfield, and plays second. That’s it.

Chris Young: Forget it.

Hoping he’s the Royals centerfielder on August 1st. This spot belongs to Cesar Puello.

Curtis Granderson: Doubtful.

Can see Granderson being traded after two years to open up another spot for a youngster.

Zach Lutz: Forget it.

Lutz has power, but at this point in his career, he needs to find a team that will give him more that a few at-bats if he will have a MLB career.

Andrew Brown: Forget it.

Brown may stick around for a year or two, but even if he were den Dekker’s handcuff, there are younger righthanded hitting outfielders in the system.

Matt den Dekker: Possibly

Keith Hernandez likes his approach the most of the rookies. Would have been nice to see him get a chance, but injuries happen and so he still may. If the Mets find another leadoff hitter, EY will not be on the team long and den Dekker will be first alternate.

Matt Harvey: Definitely.

Like every Mets fan, hoping he recovers fully from surgery.

Zack Wheeler: Definitely.

Showed good stuff and moxie as a rookie, especially with Terry Collins testing his resolve.

Jon Niese: Doubtful.

Niese is a little too inconsistent and a little too injury prone. Steven Matz is the lefty of the future. Nonetheless, can see this being Niese’s last year as Mejia, Rafael Montero and Noah Syndergaard need spots. Could be packaged with another player to get, say, Elvis Andrus.

Dillon Gee: Doubtful.

(See Niese.) Gee is not a top starter, but rather has a ceiling of a good MLB pitcher.

Bartolo Colon: Forget it

Could also be on the Royals on August 1st.

Jenrry Mejia: Possibly

Needs to stay healthy and his talent will take over from there.

Carlos Torres: Doubtful

Probably Jeremy Hefner has the spot when he heals, or possibly Jacob deGrom. Hard to expect Torres to be a long term swing man.

Bobby Parnell: Definitely.

Parnell has become a dependable reliever, no reason to move him. If his gas slows down, he could become the setup guy.

Vic Black: Definitely.

Young and very talented, he could be Parnell’s setup man or the closer.
