Glenn Sherlock, who served as a third base coach and first base coach for the new York Mets from 2016-2019, is returning to Queens to serve as the Mets’ newest bench coach. Jon Heyman of MLB Network was the first to report the news on Twitter.

Sherlock comes back to the Mets after spending the past two seasons on the Pittsburgh Pirates’ coaching staff. He was hired by the Pirates in 2019 to assist manager Derek Shelton and bench coach Don Kelly. However his primary focus was on the catchers and defensive run prevention.

During his prior tenure with the Mets, Sherlock also served as a catching instructor, so you can expect he may help out in that capacity with the Mets during this newest assignment as well. Most recently, Sherlock helped Pittsburgh catcher Jacob Stallings earn a Gold Glove Award.

It’s no surprise that the Mets’ new manager Buck Showalter brought on Sherlock. The two coaches spent time together with the Yankees and Diamondbacks (1998-2016).

Prior to working with the Diamondbacks, Sherlock also spent ten years with the Yankees, including multiple years as a manager in the minor league season. He also served as a catching instructor during the 1990’s.

As mentioned above, Showalter and Sherlock have a longstanding working relationship. Showalter managed the Yankees during Sherlock’s time with the club and it was Showalter who took him to Arizona as well.

Showalter clearly trusts Sherlock and the two work well together. The Mets will be the second organization that the two have been a part of together.

Having previously served as a third base coach and first base coach, this will be the third position Sherlock has served in when the 2022 season officially gets underway.

Sherlock, 61, brings a plethora of knowledge and veteran coaching back to the Mets as he makes his return for what will be his fourth season with the club.
