In a bit of a shocker, Jon Heyman of FanCred Sports is reporting that the New York Mets have whittled their list of general manager candidates down to two; Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom and CAA super-agent, Brodie Van Wagenen.
As per the report, it appears as if former Brewers GM Doug Melvin is out of the running.
Van Wagenen met with Mets officials, including Fred and Jeff Wilpon earlier in the week. He released a brief statement following the meeting.
“My conversations with the Mets continue to be organic. I believe baseball is better when the Mets are competitive and successful,” he said. “If the Wilpons believe I am [the person for the job], we will have that conversation.”
Bloom met with team brass on Wednesday and also declined to speak with the media, instead opting to release a brief statement that almost read like a thank you note.
“We had a productive meeting yesterday. There was a lot of baseball conversation and I enjoyed the time we spent together.”
