After the epitome of an up-and-down — and then up again — season, his first at the helm of the New York Mets, manager Mickey Callaway could have a “short leash” next season, as per Jon Heyman of FanCred Sports.
The Mets began the season on a franchise-record 11-1 stretch, only to go 15-39 through May and June, tumbling out of contention. Callaway’s team played .500 baseball through July and August (27-27), and finished strong, winning 18 of their final 28 games.
“There’s a split on Mickey Callaway within the Mets’ front office, so expect him to have a short leash in 2019,” Heyman notes. “The Mets have consistently said Callaway would return to manage next season […]. However, some within the Mets’ hierarchy see it as a work in progress that may not work out.”
There were reports in August, claiming that the organization planned to bring their first-year skipper back for a second go-round.
The Mets echoed those sentiments again during the last weekend of the season, with COO Jeff Wilpon proclaiming “the recommendation from ownership will be for [Callaway] to return”, and Callaway expressing confidence that his staff would return in its entirety.
