Confirming what I posted here last night, Jon Heyman reported today via Twitter, that the A’s are seeking a huge package of prospects in return for starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez,

Two things you cant take to the bank about the Mets this offseason:

1. Mets wont pay huge dollars for any free agents.

2. Mets wont give up huge package of prospects in any trade.

They are in “No Spend” and “Accumulation” mode.

This is why I found yesterday’s rumor that the Mets were interested in Gio Gonzalez strange.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets are among the teams talking with the Oakland A’s about starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez.

Rosenthal also tweets that the Nationals also want Gonzalez and are keying in on him and Danks of the White Sox after losing out on Mark Buehrle to the Marlins. The Mariners, Marlins, Reds, Red Sox and Rangers also have interest.

Gonzalez went 16-12 with a 3.12 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 202 innings pitched during the 2011 season. The 26 year old left-hander was also named to the All-Star team last season.

This is strange. The A’s reportedly have a very high asking price for Gonzalez and any Mets offer would most likely begin with Jon Niese just for starters.

The Detroit Tigers balked when the A’s demanded top prospects Jacob Turner, Nick Castellanos and Drew Smyly in return for Gonzalez.
