After tossing seven shutout innings against the Miami Marlins, Mets right-hander Matt Harvey responded to comments from Nationals’ outfielders Jayson Werth  and Bryce Harper. Harvey told reporters that the Mets are only focused on themselves and aren’t concerned about what other people think.

“I think we’re just keeping our head down and staying focused here in our clubhouse,” Harvey said. “I think if we go out and put up runs and keep pitching the way that we are, we’re going to be just fine. Regardless of worrying about what other people think, we’re definitely staying focused here in our clubhouse and doing everything we can to win here.”

“We’ve come down here and played some tough games,” Harvey said. “A lot of the time it seems like we’re going home unhappy. For us to come down and do what we did and continue what we’re doing is pretty important and pretty special. We’re not going to stop here. We got more games to go. We want to put the pedal down.” (NJ.com)

Despite falling out of first place, Werth says it’s Washington’s division to lose and Harper says he doesn’t give a crap about the Mets. However, it’s time the Nationals take New York as a serious threat as they have won six games in a row and have increased their division lead to two games following yesterday’s win.

I’m glad the Mets are handling this the right way by doing their talking on the field. These off the field stories can become a distraction, but the Mets have not lost focus and have continued to play great baseball.
