Are we getting closer to a David Stearns – Craig Counsell reunion?

With his current Milwaukee contract set to expire on October 31, Andy Martino of SNY reported today that Counsell would “welcome the challenge” of managing in New York, per two league sources.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

A native of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, Counsell has managed Milwaukee since 2015, compiling an overall record of 797-625. Doug Melvin, GM of the Brewers before Stearns, hired the former infielder as manager. Counsell has strong family ties to the Midwest region, where his four children currently attend college and high school.

Stearns and Counsell enjoyed significant success together – Milwaukee qualified for the playoffs four consecutive seasons, from 2018-2021, under their combined leadership.  The Mets, on the other hand, have never qualified for the playoffs three consecutive seasons, let alone four.

Would Counsell rejoin Stearns for the opportunity to bring unprecedented organizational success to the Mets?

Fans and media must wait until Counsell’s contract with the Brewers expires on October 31 to see where he winds up. However, after today’s report, things are looking up for the Mets.
