The Mets are playing Spring Training baseball, and with each and every passing day, we get closer and closer to Opening Day.  As fans, this means we are getting closer and closer to attending a game at Citi Field.

When attending a game, we each have our own rituals.  Some go right down to the field level to watch batting practice and try to nab an autograph or two.  Others like to find a scorecard and get ready to keep score.

Eventually, all of us will find our way to our favorite concession to grab something to eat during the game.  So with that in mind, we have asked some of our staff what their favorite foodie stop is at Citi Field.

John Azzato – Shake Shack

I think the best concession stop at Citi Field is Shake Shack. They have a great cheeseburger paired with cheese fries which I get with extra “shack sauce” and a black and white shake.  It’s usually a place I always stop whenever I see the Mets play.

Rob Piersall – Shake Shack

I’m a vegetarian now but when I wasn’t: double shack burger, fries and a black and white shake from Shake Shack.  As a vegetarian: Box Frites garlic fries.

Ed Leyro – Bash Burger

While the burger connoisseurs would spend three innings standing in line at Shake Shack, I was making my way over to the Bash Burger stand by Josh Capon. The Double Barrel burger and Bash waffle fries were probably the best burger/fries combo in the stadium. Another go-to meal for me was the Steak Frites, which were sold at the Pat LaFrieda stand on the Promenade Level. The tender steak on a bed of waffle fries smothered in caramelized onions and cheese sauce is making my mouth water just thinking about it.

Dilip Sridhar – Keith’s Grill

Keith’s Grill. I had a Mex Burger. Truth be told, that’s the only real memorable vendor I’ve ever eaten from at Citi Field.

Tim Ryder – Keith’s Grill

Number one is the Mex Burger from Keith’s Grill. Pat Frieda’s Steak Sammy has made it’s way into my heavy rotation, but taking down a bacon, (two) cheese burger that’s also stacked with jalapenos, all in the name of The Mustached One himself, makes it far and away my go-to-concession. Honorable mention goes to chicken fingers and french fries.

John Sheridan – Helmet Nacho

While I love Shack Shack, Box Frites, and Arancini Bros, I don’t really have the time to wait in those lines because: (1) I don’t want to miss any game action; and (2) I now go to games with my son and waiting in line with a little kid to get food isn’t how I want to ever spend my time.

To that end, I have found the best bet concession in Citi Field is the Helmet Nacho stand.  There are rarely big lines, and when there are lines, they move quickly.  You get plenty to share with a few people because they fill up an entire plastic batting helmet with your choice of toppings with include chicken, cheese, sour cream, jalapenos, salsa, etc.

Once you’re done, you can rinse it out and have it as a souvenir for either you or your kid.  And believe it or not, much like those ice cream helmets, they do come in handy.

In addition to all our favorites, Citi Field is chock full of so many other delectable delights including some of the following fan favorites.

This delicious Chicken Parmesan is served on a toasted sesame seed hero and available at Nicoletta by the Taste of the City on the field level concourse.

Head over to Arancini Bros. for the most amazing Stuffed Rice Balls in the city. They have over a dozen yummy fillings including Buffalo Chicken, Mac and Cheese, French Onion and even a Nutella stuffed rice ball to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Box Frites is the place for the perfect crispy frites that you can get with a wide assortment of delicious toppings and a great selection of dipping sauces. I recommend the Garlic Parmesan and the Bacon, Cheddar and Green Onion.

Of course you can never go wrong with a perfectly grilled Nathan’s Hot Dog and don’t forget their irresistible famous fries. And no, a hot dog is not a sandwich! 🙂
