astronauts

How many of you believe in karma? You know, the notion that when you do something good or bad it eventually comes right back at ya? Well, count me among the big believers in karma, and let me tell you that sometimes karma can be a real bitch…

The Mets front office are jetting to Queens this morning as the 2014 GM Meetings came to a close.

This year’s proceedings all began with a joke from general manager Sandy Alderson about counting big stacks of five-dollar bills. But in the end it was Scott Boras who got the last laugh when he said, “The Mets are like NASA. They have big rockets, a lot of platforms but very few astronauts.”

When told about the Mets’ not wanting to add any $100 million dollar players to pair with David Wright, Boras smirked and added, “The hardest thing about limits is that it doesn’t limit others. It limits you.”

And with that, the GM Meetings came to a close.

By the way, the Mets never did have that much ballyhooed meeting with Scott Boras.. You know the one that had been planned and talked about for the last three days… The one where they were going to discuss Shin-Soo Choo, Jacoby Ellsbury and Stephen Drew… The one of which I said, “Why would they have a meeting when there’s really nothing to talk about?”

splashdown

Mets C.O.O. Jeff Wilpon rocketed enthusiasm for Met fans when he alluded that the Mets had something cooking and that Sandy spoke to an astronaut, err player, and that an announcement would come later that evening.

But an hour later, it all came splashing down when Sandy Alderson, who was informed about Jeff’s comments, exclaimed, “no, no, no” and told reporters that nothing was imminent.

The beat writers said the look on his face was one of bewilderment. Now Sandy knows how we feel when he pulls a gag on us.

So what started with a joke, ended with a joke all we learned were these few things…

1. The Mets will most likely not sacrifice a draft pick to sign any of the 13 free agents who received qualifying offers.

2. The Mets will not add another $100 million player as they believe that having one player like that (David Wright) on the payroll is more than enough.

3. The Mets’ interest in Curtis Granderson and Nelson Cruz was overstated and signing either of them is very unlikely.

4. The Mets spoke to shortstop Jhonny Peralta. But then a Met executive told Joel Sherman not to put much stock into it and that he just happened to be in Orlando.

5. Ike Davis is as good as gone, and there’s a good chance that Daniel Murphy could be too.

Unfortunately, those last five items were not a joke.

Well, I’m not gonna sit and stew over this and neither should you… I’m going to pretend we have a real owner and a real front office and a real payroll budget, and I’ll write about likely trade scenarios, players we should target, and stuff like that for the rest of the week.

Because after all, ya gotta believe…
