Pitching

Marcus Stroman made his second start of the spring for the Mets. The 28-year old was having a strong start as he retired two, until he gave up a homer to Paul Goldschmidt to give the Cardinals the early lead. However, Stroman got out of the inning as catcher Yadier Molina grounded out. Stroman went out to pitch the bottom of the second and got off to a rocky start. The right hander gave up a lead-off walk to Tyler O’Neill followed by a single to Harrison Bader. Due to a fielding error, the bases were loaded. Yet, Stroman got out of this as well thanks to a lineout to second and a much needed double play.

Matt Blackham replaced Stroman in the third inning and had himself a solid outing. Blackham struck out one and gave up no hits.

A slimmed down Jeurys Familia took over in the fourth, giving up a walk to O’Neil and a single to Bader but got out of the inning without giving up any runs. Paul Sewald entered the game in the fifth and he had a one, two, three inning.

Daniel Zamora proceeded Sewald in the sixth and he had a one, two, three inning as well as he struck out two. Impressively, he faced all righties in Goldschmidt, Molina, and O’Neill.

Erasmo Ramirez replaced Zamora as he entered the game in the seventh inning but also pitched through the eighth. Ramirez had a smooth seventh inning, but gave up a homer to Austin Dean in the eighth to tie the game 2-2. While Ramirez was shaken up, he managed to get out of the inning to move the game onto the ninth.

Finally, Ryley Gilliam closed out the game, earning the save to lead the Mets to their second victory of the spring. He had to work around a Tim Tebow miscue in left field.

Offense

The Mets managed just seven hits on Friday, but that was enough to lead them to their first win since Monday.

The Mets offense started out strong. Brandon Nimmo got the team off to this start by hitting a line drive single to right. Robinson Cano walked and Dominic Smith singled with a pristine line drive, bringing Nimmo in to score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jake Hager and Tim Tebow were both hit by pitches. Edgardo Fermin walked to loaded the bases and center fielder Johneshwy Fargas grounded into a double play which ended up bringing Hager in to score and tying the game by a score of 2-2.

The bats were basically silent until the bottom of the eighth when esteemed prospect Andres Gimenez  hit a beautiful homer to right field to reign the Mets victorious by a score of 3-2.
