According to CSN Bay Area, the San Francisco Giants will not be making qualifying offers to any of their free agents this offseason including Angel Pagan.
It was believed that Pagan would get a $13 million qualifying offer from the Giants as protection in case negotiations on a longterm deal don’t work out.
Pagan will get a lot more attention now that teams won’t lose their first round draft pick to sign him. The center fielder batted .288/.338/.440 with 95 runs, 29 stolen bases and a major league leading 15 triples last season.
Scott White of Crazy Crabbers writes that going back to 2009, Pagan has been worth $13.2 million, $21.8 million, $3.9 million and $21.6 million according to Fangraphs WAR to dollar conversion. That’s an average of $15.1 million per season over that period. he adds that it doesn’t seem like much of an overpay to consider him at one year, $13 million, because essentially that is his fair market value.
From Pagan’s point of view, he just gained a lot of leverage against the Giants, and he might even get a four year deal on the open market now.
