On Tuesday, the Mets added depth to their infield in the signing of utilityman Jonathan Villar.

Villar was born on May 2, 1991 in La Vega, Dominican Republic. He was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an international free agent on May 20, 2008. Villar spent two years in the Phillies’ Minor League system before being traded to the Astros in 2010 in the deal that sent Roy Oswalt to the Phillies.

In 2012, Villar was invited as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training with the Astros. His contract would be selected by the Astros later that season.

Villar made his Major League debut on July 22, 2013 against the Oakland Athletics. He was 1-for-4 in his MLB debut, picking up his first Major League hit on a bunt single to pitcher Tommy Milone in the bottom of the third in Houston. Villar spent the remainder of the 2013 season at the Major League level and would float between the majors and minors throughout the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Villar was then traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in November, 2015. He was with the Brewers from 2015 through July 2018.

In his first year in Milwaukee, Villar led the National League with 62 stolen bases. That season, he hit .285/.369/.457, with a .826 OPS. In July of 2018, Villar was sent to the Baltimore Orioles in the trade that sent second baseman Jonathan Schoop to Milwaukee.

Between Milwaukee and Baltimore in 2018, Villar batted .260/.325/.384, with a .709 OPS. He had 14 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs, 46 RBI’s and accumulated 41 walks.

In 2019, Villar played in every game for the Baltimore Orioles, hitting .274/.339/.453, with a .792 OPS. He had 33 doubles, five triples, 24 home runs, 73 RBI’s, and 61 walks. He also accrued 40 stolen bases in 2019 and was caught stealing on nine attempts.

Following the season, Villar was acquired by the Miami Marlins in trade for left-handed pitcher Easton Lucas. He spent the first half of the 2020 season with the Marlins, before being traded at the deadline to the Toronto Blue Jays.

In the COVID-19 shortened campaign, Villar batted .232/.301/.292, with a .593 OPS. He had five doubles, two home runs, 15 RBI’s, and 19 walks. He accumulated 16 stolen bases in 21 attempts.

Overall for his Major League career, Villar has batted .259/.327/.400, with a .727 OPS. He has hit a total of 137 doubles, 15 triples, 80 home runs, 283 RBI’s, and 283 walks over the course of 831 games played.

On Tuesday, the Mets signed Villar to add depth to their infield. The veteran has experience playing every position except right field, first base and catcher at the big league level.

Villar is known for his versatility, speed, and his ability to be a switch hitter and produce from both sides of the plate. Signed to only a one-year, $3.55 million deal, Villar certainly gives the Mets some upside at a relatively low cost.
