The Mets fought valiantly tonight, but it was not to be as Julio Teheran and Dillon Gee engaged in a great pitcher’s duel which saw Gee flirt with a no-hit bid.
After both Teheran and Gee traded zeroes through the first three and a half frames, the Amazins’ struck first in the bottom of the fourth when Ike Davis drove in Marlon Byrd after Byrd’s one-out…eh…triple. Unfortunately, that was the only run they would score all night.
Gee tossed six no-hit innings, but quickly found himself in trouble when Freddie Freeman hit a missile back up the middle to lead off the frame. The bases quickly loaded up, but Gee battled out of it inducing Chris Johnson to ground out to third and then ringing up Joey Terdoslavic for the third out of the inning.
LaTroy Hawkins tossed a scoreless eighth and the Mets threatened in the bottom, yet couldn’t cash in, and it would cost them. Bobby Parnell allowed two runs in the ninth, blowing his fourth save of the year.
The Mets threatened again in the bottom of the ninth, and it looked like they were getting to Braves closer Craig Kimbrel. However, it was not to be as Jason Heyward delivered the dagger and robbed Justin Turner with the tying run on first for the final out of the game.
The series continues at 7:10 tomorrow night as Carlos Torres battles Kris Medlen for game two.
Notes:
- Mets’ pitchers had hurled 21 straight shutout innings before Parnell entered. Gee has now thrown 13.2 straight scoreless innings.
- David Wright had some great swings tonight and thankfully doesn’t seem to have carried over any ill effects from the home run derby last week.
- Ike Davis continues to confuse us all. He’ll have his good days and his bad days, but he was overall impressive at the plate tonight, driving in the only Mets run when he shot a single to right field. He also hit an opposite field double that dropped in just right of the line.
