The Mets are on a three-game winning streak and are back to .500! Last night took the lead early on a first-inning grand slam by Wilson Ramos, who really needed something positive to happen on the baseball diamond. Then Syndergaard took over. He no-hit the Nationals through five innings and would leave after eight innings allowing two runs. Dominic Smith provided the icing on the cake with a solo shot to dead center and Lugo had to pitch only one inning!

Now the Mets turn to Wilmer Font for a second start. The Mets bullpen has now had effectively three days off (with the exception of Lugo who pitched yesterday and Diaz who warmed up). While I would have preferred anyone else to pitch the ninth yesterday to allow Lugo to pitch possibly more than one inning today, that isn’t what happened. The condition of the bullpen is important because Font will most likely pitch between four and six innings. In his first start with the Mets, he allowed two runs over four innings from three hits and no walks. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

Patrick Corbin has been good overall for the Nationals this year. He is 3-1 over eight starts and 50.2 innings with a 3.20 ERA, 3.48 FIP, 1.105 WHIP, and 139 ERA+. He went through a rough patch at the end of April, beginning of May where he allowed 12 runs, 11 earned, over 17.0 innings, a 5.82 ERA, but in his last start he rebounded by shutting out the Dodgers over seven innings. Against the Mets this year he has allowed five runs over 12 innings in his first two starts of the season. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Game Notes

The Mets are 14-8 against the NL East this season. New York is in the midst of 12 straight games again the division. Only Philadelphia (15 wins) and Houston (15 wins) have more victories vs. their division this season.

Jeff McNeil has hit .345 (30-for-87) with a .430 OBP in 21 games as the team’s leadoff hitter this season. He has reached base in his leadoff plate appearance in 10 of those 21 games and has a .500 average (12-for-24) in the opening frame, tied for second-best in the majors. His .538 first-inning OBP ranks third in the majors.

Seth Lugo has hurled 12.1 scoreless innings dating to April 22. He’s allowed just four hits, issued two walks and struck out 16. Lugo has stranded all six of the runners he’s inherited this year. He has posted a 1.27 ERA (three earned runs/21.1 innings) with 27 strikeouts since April 7. This compares to a 12.27 ERA (five earned runs/3.2 innings) over his first four outings this year. He is tied for the third among major league relievers with 25 innings
pitched and is tied for fourth with 32 strikeouts.

Michael Conforto has reached base in 10 of his last 13 plate appearances. He is 6-for-9 with six runs, two home runs, three walks and three RBI over his last three games. He has reached base safely twice in a game 24 times this season. He is tied for third in the majors with 30 walks.

Let’s Go Mets!
