The Mets tried to come back against the Phillies last night but after a bases clearing hit in the 8th, the Phillies pushed the game beyond the Mets reach. For the Mets, they at least won the series as they head into another tough series with the Nationals starting today.
While the Mets won’t be able to move into play-off contention with a sweep this series, they can move make the entire Wild Card race tighter. Currently the Mets are 4 games behind the Cubs for the second spot and 8.5 games behind the Nationals. The Nationals have won 9-1 of their last 10, but if they were to collapse a bit this next week, both Wild Card spots would be open.

The first step to getting back in the race is winning today, which is what Noah Syndergaard will try to do for a Mets team who had an awfully tight turn around with a day game after a night game in a different city. Noah is 9-7 over 26 games and 163.0 innings with a 4.14 ERA, 3.58 FIP, 1.215 WHIP and 99 ERA+. His last start was awful, raising his ERA from 3.71 to 4.14. He allowed 10 runs, 9 earned, over 3.0 innings against the Cubs. He allowed 10 runs, 9 earned between July 24th and August 22nd as a comparison.
