WILMER! The New York Mets (36-51) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (49-39) in the first game of the double header to the score of 4-3 on the strength of another walk-off homer!

Pitching

Zack Wheeler gave up a single to Cesar Hernandez to lead off the game but struck out Rhys Hoskins and Odubel Herrera. After a walk to Carlos Santana, Wheeler surrendered a single to Nick Williams giving the Phillies an early 1-0 lead.

Andrew Knapp led off the second inning with a single but Wheeler was able to retire the next two batters. Hernandez would single off Wheeler with Knapp advancing to third on the play. Hoskins gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead with a RBI single.

Wheeler struck out Herrera to end the inning. After pitching an effortless third inning, Wheeler gave up a one out homer to Maikel Franco that tied the game at 3-3. Wheels would bounce back from the homer and strike out the next two batters to end the frame.

Wheeler retired the first two batters in the fifth inning. Wheeler walked Santana who advanced to third on a Nick Williams. It would be the last batter Wheeler would face for the day. Wheeler finished the afternoon with a 4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 8K. He tossed 102 pitches with 64 of them being for strikes.

Seth Lugo relieved Wheeler with runners on the corners and two outs but retired Scott Kingery to end the inning and threat. Lugo gave up a one out single to Franco but got Aaron Altherr to ground into a double play keeping the score tied at 3-3.

Lugo walked Hernandez to lead off the seventh inning who stole second without a throw. Lugo kept the game tied as he retired the next three batters to end inning. The right-gander struck out Williams to start the eighth but was pulled from the game when he walked the next three batters to load the bases.

Robert Gsellman came in relief of Lugo with the game on the line. Gsellman struck out Jesmuel Valentin after running the count full and got Hernandez to ground out to first keeping the score tied 3-3.

With the game still tied 3-3 in the ninth, Jeurys Familia retired the side in order.

Tim Peterson came in to pitch the tenth inning and allowed a lead off single to Williams. Kingrey laid down a bunt down on the third base side of the mound but Peterson was unable to throw him out.

With two on and no outs Knapp tried to bunt over the runners but it was hit hard enough for Peterson to get the force out at third. Peterson got Franco to pop up and struck out pinch-hitter Dylan Cozens to end the inning.

Hitting

Trailing 1-0 in the first inning, Asdrubal Cabrera tied the game with a solo homerun off Phillies starter Zach Eflin. 

In the home half of the third with two outs, Brandon Nimmo singled to left field. Next batter Jose Bautista singled to center fielder Odubel Herrera but Herrera overran the ball which allowed Nimmo to score and tie the game to the score 0f 2-2.

Bautista advanced to second on the fielding error and later scored when Cabrera hit a double to to center to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

Amed Rosario led off the fifth inning with a double down the left field line. Rosario made a major base running blunder as he got caught way off the bag at second when Nimmo hit a come-backer to the pitcher.

Wilmer Flores led off the tenth inning and was nearly hit with a pitch that was reviewed. Luckily for the Mets, the play on the field was not overturned as he hit a walk-off homerun that hit the left field foul pole. Flores is now the Mets all time leader in walk-off RBIs with 10.

On Deck

The New York Mets seek to win consecutive home games for the first time since May 21st when they send Corey Oswalt (0-1, 7.94 ERA) to the mound in Game 2 of today’s double header against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies will counter with staff ace Aaron Nola (11-2, 2.41 ERA). Firs pitch for the second game of the twi-night doubleheader will start at 8:05 p.m. EST.
