Well if you sat through nine innings of that, I apologize on behalf of the entire New York Mets organization. They lost by a final score of 14-3 on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. (Box Score)

Pitching

Steven Matz got the start for the Mets. He did not record an out. Unfortunately, he was not an opener either.

Andrew McCutchen reached on an error by Amed Rosario. Matz then gave up a double to Jean Segura. He followed that by hitting Bryce Harper. With the bases loaded and no-one out, he gave up a two-run double to J.T. Realmuto. The next batter, Scott Kingery, hit a three-run homer.

Unfortunately the inning was only halfway done. Cesar Hernandez walked and Aaron Altherr reached on an error. Maikel Franco proceeded to end Matz’s night with a three-run homer of his own. Matz’s final line was: 0+ IP, 4 H, 8 R (6 ER), BB, K.

Drew Gagnon came in for Matz and retired his first batter but gave up a double to McCutchen and walked Harper. J.T. Realmuto made him pay with a two-run double (aided by a Jeff McNeil misplay).

The second inning was a quick 1-2-3 inning though. He even managed to hit 94 MPH on the radar gun. The third was also a 1-2-3 frame. In the fourth, he served up a homer to Realmuto to end his little run of dominance. Kingery got a single right after that too but Gagnon worked his way around it.

The fifth inning was retired in order by Gagnon. The wheels started to fall off for Gagnon in the sixth inning though. Well, I guess whatever wheels were left from when he started.

He gave up a single to Bryce Harper and a fielding error by J.D. Davis exasperated the matter. Scott Kingery doubled home a run and that was the end of his night. Paul Sewald came in and let an inherited runner score which charged Gagnon with another run. His final line was: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R (5 ER), BB, 5 K.

Sewald also pitched the seventh and eighth innings. He had a second and third, one-out jam that he worked out of in the seventh. In the eighth, he let the first two reach but also wiggled around that with the help of a double play.

Somewhere, Tom Glavine is sitting back and smiling.

Offense

Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso both reached to begin the first but the Mets could not bring them around. Nimmo left the game in the first inning due to neck stiffness.

Wilson Ramos hit his first Mets home run in the second inning. Michael Conforto homered in the third inning too.

The Mets had their best chance to get back into the game in the fifth. Alonso walked, Robinson Cano doubled, and Conforto walked. Ramos hit a sacrifice fly and the Mets only got one run out of the inning.

Jeff McNeil went 2-for-3 in the game. J.D. Davis went 2-for-4 with a double too.

On Deck

Zack Wheeler will look to win the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. against the Phillies.
