The New York Mets (28-38) were defeated by the Arizona Diamondbacks (39-30) 7-3 on Friday night at Chase Field.

Pitching

The Diamondbacks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Paul Goldschmidt took Seth Lugo deep to right. He issued a two out walk to David Peralta, and allowed a single to Daniel Descalso, but struck out Nick Ahmed to strand runners on the corners and limit the damage in the first.

Lugo bounced back in a big way, as he struck out the side in a strong bottom of the second. Arizona jumped back in front in the third behind three straight singles from Jon Jay, Goldschmidt, and Lamb. Descalso then made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly.

Lugo struck out Dyson and worked around a two out Zack Godley single in a scoreless fourth. After Peralta kept the inning going with a two out single, Descalso crushed a changeup for a two run home run to make it 5-2 Arizona.

Lugo threw 100 pitches over five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Making his Mets debut, Chris Beck issued a one out walk to Dyson, who stole both second and third. Jay then singled him home to increase the lead to 6-2. Kevin Plawecki caught Jay trying to steal second to end the inning.

Beck retired the first two in the sixth, but was pulled after allowing a single to Peralta and issuing walks to Descalso and Ahmed to load the bases. Jerry Blevins came on to face the lefty Avila, and he struck him out to strand the bases loaded.

After Jay tripled with two outs, Goldschmidt made it 7-2 with his third hit of the game, an RBI single to right off of Anthony Swarzak.

Hitting

Michael Conforto drew a walk to lead off the game. A pair of groundouts by Todd Frazier and Brandon Nimmo put Conforto on third, but Asdrubal Cabrera struck out to strand him there.

After Jose Bautista drew a walk leading off the second, Dominic Smith drove a double to left, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Kevin Plawecki grounded out to third, and Bautista was thrown out at the plate trying to score on an Amed Rosario shallow fly out.

The Mets again put the first two men on in the third, as Seth Lugo singled and Conforto was hit by a pitch. Frazier lined an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at one apiece. However, the runners were again stranded on second and third with nobody out as Nimmo, Cabrera, and Bautista struck out in order.

Dominic Smith led off the top of the fourth with his first home run of the season, a solo shot off the right field foul pole to make it 3-2 Arizona. Kevin Plawecki then drew a walk, but he was quickly erased as he was picked off on a snap throw by catcher Alex Avila.

Jose Reyes led off the ninth with a pinch-hit double to center, he advanced to third as Plawecki reached on an error. Wilmer Flores then lined an RBI double to right center to cut the lead to 7-3.

The Mets went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranded a total of 21 baserunners.

Dominic Smith made his first big league appearance in the outfield, as he was moved to left field in the bottom of the sixth.

Flores made his return from the disabled list in the bottom of the sixth, and went 1-for-2 with an RBI double.
