The New York Mets (35-51) were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays (45-44) by a score of 9-0 at Citi Field in Sunday afternoon’s series finale.

Pitching

Chris Flexen started and did not do much flexing. He gave up a three-run homer in the first inning to CJ Cron. He pitched a scoreless second inning but gave up a couple of runs in the third. The Mets subsequently pulled him as he was due up to bat in the bottom half of the third.

Fellow Chris, Chris Beck, gave up two runs in three innings of work. It was his first outing in quite some time. Full disclosure, I totally forgot he was still on the team.

Tyler Bashlor relieved him and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning with a strikeout.

Paul Sewald pitched the eighth but gave up a homer to Joey Wendle. He also loaded the bases with one out and gave up a run on an RBI groundout.

Tim Peterson pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Offense

Nathan Eovaldi looked like “Nasty Nate” in today’s game.

He had six perfect innings until Brandon Nimmo broke it up in the seventh with a single.

In terms of other baserunners in the game, Michael Conforto walked in the eighth, Devin Mesoraco singled in the ninth inning, and Nimmo walked with two outs in the ninth as well.

On Deck

We get two Mets games tomorrow! Now I’ll let you decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Zack Wheeler gets the start in Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies who will counter with Zach Eflin. Corey Oswalt will take the mound in the second game against Aaron Nola.
