The Rockies took the first game of the series against the Mets by a 5-1 score at Citi Field on Friday night.

Pitching

Mets ace Jacob deGrom didn’t have great offspeed stuff on Friday night though he fought through to keep his offense in the game.

Raimel Tapia managed to drive a ball out to right center in the third inning which scored Tony Wolters and put Tapia on second, making the score 1-0. It was only the second earned run Colorado has ever scored on deGrom at Citi Field.

Jake was able to get out of the inning by blowing a fastball by Trevor Story.

David Dahl was able to smack a ball up the middle for a single to start off the fourth. Former Met, Daniel Murphy drove a ball into left field for a one-out single. Ian Desmond continued the rally for Colorado by bringing in Dahl with a single into right field, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Rockies.

DeGrom escaped the fourth inning jam by striking out Brendan Rodgers and Wolters swinging.

The Rockies would make deGrom work in the sixth though he would wind up with a scoreless inning.

DeGrom came back out for the sixth inning at 100 pitches, he would go 1-2-3 wit two strikeouts. While he certainly struggled to command his secondary pitches on the night, the former Cy Young winner allowed only two runs on six hits in six innings, walked one, and struck out 10.

Robert Gsellman (1-1, 5.05)  came into the game in the seventh hoping to rebound after his disastrous outing against the Giants on Tuesday and that he did. He struck out the side on 12 pitches.

Drew Gagnon (3-1, 4.76) was brought in from the bullpen in the with the Mets trailing only 2-1. David Dahl hit a two-run homer and Daniel Murphy (of course) hit solo shot to extend the Rockies lead to 4-1.

The next batter was Ian Desmond and he got drilled by Gagnon, causing the benches to clear. The situation seemed to die down, but Ian Desmond was still trading words with the Met players which caused another confrontation. The home plate umpire, Chris Segal imposed warnings to both benches.

Wilmer Font got the last out of the eighth inning while stranding two runners. Hector Santiago followed with a scoreless ninth.

Offense

Michael Conforto singled in a scoreless first inning for the Mets.

In the second, Amed Rosario poked a ball down the right-field line for a double. He was stranded there after Juan Lagares flew out to end the inning.

Dominic Smith walked to start the fourth inning and Wilson Ramos grounded a routine double-play ball to Trevor Story, however, Story overthrew Brendan Rodgers which allowed Ramos to reach first and Smith to reach third.

Senzatela was able to work around the error as he retied Todd Frazier and Rosario to end the frame.

The Mets offense finally woke up in the sixth as Michael Conforto hit a shot to the right-field seats making the score 2-1. This was his 12th HR of the year and the Mets’ 85th.

In the bottom of the ninth, Dominic Smith stayed hot with a double to left.

Following Smith’s double, Wilson Ramos rocketed a ball out to right center, but it was caught by Dahl as he crashed into the wall.

Todd Frazier legged out an infield single, advancing Smith to third. Rosario would ground out to end the game.

Conforto and Smith each had two hits in the game while Jeff McNiel and Pete Alonso had a rare night in which they both went 0-for-4.
