The New York Mets (17-11) dropped the second game of their series with the Braves (18-11), 7-0. More importantly, they lost Jacob deGrom in the fourth inning and lost possession of first place for the first time this season to their opponent.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom was sharp early on. His fastball velocity was as high as it was all season. He looked borderline unstoppable for his four innings of work. His final line included two hits and six strikeouts over four innings.

However, he left the game in the bottom of the fourth with a “hyperextended right elbow.” As a result, Paul Sewald was asked to do some heavy lifting. His first few batters went well but the last few did not.

He retired the side, 1-2-3 in the fifth but gave up a leadoff double to Ender Inciarte in the sixth. He was on the verge of getting out of the inning but Chipper Freeman, sorry Freddie Freeman, had to spoil his success with an RBI single.

In the seventh, he gave up a two-out double to the pitcher, Sean Newcomb, followed by a homer to Ender Inciarte. Sewald went three innings but gave up three.

Robert Gsellman pitched the eighth and struggled to say the least. He gave up four runs in the inning including two home runs.

AJ Ramos pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts and no walks (surprisingly).

Offense

The offense fell flat on their faces in this one. The team only had four baserunners all game.

Yoenis Cespedes had another extra base-hit in this one. He seems to be heating up, which the Mets sorely need right now.

Just a poor night at Citi Field. The energy really left the stadium once deGrom left the game.

On Deck

The Mets will play a day game tomorrow and send Jason Vargas to the mound and he will look to avoid the sweep against Braves and  Julio Teheran at 1:10 p.m. The game can be seen on SNY and heard on 710 WOR.
