The Mets looked to take three of four against divisional rivals the Atlanta Braves. Jacob deGrom (2-1, 3.18) faced off against Julio Teheran in Atlanta. deGrom looked to bounce back after a woeful start against the Twins at Citi Field. With his streak of 26 straight quality starts snapped, deGrom tried to start a new one in Hotlanta.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom looked to bounce back from his first bad outing since the prehistoric ages against a loaded Atlanta lineup coming off a implosion last night, where they put up 11 runs.

deGrom’s night started with a hitless first in which Josh Donaldson walked, but was stranded on the bases, so no harm no foul. deGrom’s second inning, however, started with a solo homerun by Nick Markakis, putting the Braves up by one.

Ronald Acuna would single in Ozzie Albies, putting the Braves back on top in the third. deGrom would continue to Nick Markakis and Ender Enciarte to end the inning. deGrom set Tyler Flowers, Teheran, and Albies down in order in the top of the fourth, striking out Teheran.

In the fifth, deGrom gave up a solo blast to Josh Donaldson to start the inning, his third earned run of the night. He wound up sandwiching a Acuna walk between strikeouts to Freeman and Markakis. deGrom used his cat like abilities to field a chopper from Johan Camargo and throw him out at first base, ending his night with three earned runs, nine strikeouts, four walks, two homeruns allowed, and over 115 pitches… all in just five innings of work.

Justin Wilson worked the sixth, in which he gave up a two run homerun to Charlie Culberson after giving up a single to Tyler Flowers. Culberson took Wilson into the Braves’ bullpen at 377 feet after the ball exited the bat at 101 MPH. Wilson threw 33 pitches in the inning, easily the most hes thrown in an inning this season. He was relieved by Paul Sewald after only recording two outs, and Sewald recorded the final out to end the inning.

Sewald stayed on for the seventh, where he promptly walked the leadoff hitter Markakis. Markakis scored on a Camargo RBI-double to left center field, extending the Braves’ lead to 6-1. Camargo was stranded at second base by Sewald, ending his night.

Sewald was replaced by Jeryus Familia in the eighth and faced the top of the lineup. Familia started off the inning by allowing a triple to Albies on the first pitch. On the second pitch, Familia gave up a single to Donaldson, driving in Albies. On the third pitch, the result was a little bit better.

Freeman flew out to Conforto in right, recording the first out. He then walked Acuna, Familia got Markakis to ground into a double-play, ending the inning with only one run allowed.

Hitting

The Mets and Braves met on Sunday night to close out their four-game series in Atlanta with the Braves looking to earn a split of the series. The Mets got started quickly with runners on second and third in the top of the first, but the runners were stranded after a Wilson Ramos groundout to end the inning,

In the bottom of the second, J.D. Davis put the Mets on the board with a laser of a homerun to left center field off of a hanging slider from Julio Teheran, his third of the season.

Robinson Cano singled for the Mets only runner in the third frame. The Mets put runners on first and second with two outs in the fourth inning, but the lineup card found Jacob deGrom’s name, and he struck out to retire the side in the top of the fourth.

To leadoff in the fifth, Brandon Nimmo singled into shallow right field, but Teheran retired the next three hitters in order to strand Nimmo on first. A one out Jeff McNeil walk was the Mets’ choice of a base runner in the top of the sixth, but he was stranded after a Amed Rosario strikeout and JD Davis line out to left field.

Jesse Briddle set the Mets down scoreless in the top of the seventh, although Nimmo singled with one out. Cano and Alonso struck out with Nimmo on second base to end the inning.

Wilson Ramos and Jeff McNeil both singled in the eighth to put runners on first and third with one out for Amed Rosario. The Braves then brought in Luke Jackson to relieve Jonny Venters. Jackson allowed a run right away with Rosario reaching on an infield single.

Dominic Smith pinch hit for JD Davis, and flew out to right field. Keon Broxton, who flew out in his first at bat, singled into right field, scoring Jeff McNeil to make it 6-3. Brandon Nimmo came up as the tying run with two away, and struck out swinging to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth, the Mets failed to score on AJ Minter, ending the Mets night with only 3 runs scored.
