The New York Mets (65-78) faced the Miami Marlins (57-86) tonight and ended up falling to Miami at the score of 5-3. Mets offense played Groundhog Day once again and could not score enough for him to win.
Pitching:
Jacob deGrom pitched seven strong innings tonight against the Miami Marlins.
DeGrom struck out nine, and gave up only two earned runs on a well struck double by outfielder Lewis Brinson.
Unfortunately, the Mets offense couldn’t give deGrom enough run support to secure him a win or at least a no-decison.
So now his record falls down under .500 to (8-9) despite the best ERA in the national league (1.71). But on the bright side Jacob owns the major league record for giving up three earned runs or less in 26 starts.
Anthony Swarzak pitched the 8th inning, ended up giving up one earned run on a solo shot to extend the Marlins lead to 3-1.
Robert Gsellman struggled in his relief appearance in the 9th giving up multiple extra base hits that lead to two earned runs which gave the Marlins some insurance runs to give them a 5-1 lead.
Hitting:
In the bottom of the 6th inning, Michael Conforto got the offense rolling with an opposite field homer to left field to cut the Mets deficit to 2-1. Conforto’s home run was the third home run in three days that’s the first time he has ever done that in his major league career.
Kevin Plawecki hit a two-run no-doubter in the bottom of the 9th to cut the Mets deficit even more 5-3.
On Deck:
The New York Mets will be playing a single admission double-header tomorrow against the Miami Marlins. Game 1 will be started by Zack Wheeler (10-7, 3.39 ERA) at 4:10pm. The following game will be pitched by Jason Vargas(5-9, 6.75 ERA).
