The New York Mets (69-80) lost the Boston Red Sox (103-47) by a score of 4-3 to lose the third and final game of a three-game series at Fenway Park
Pitching
Jacob deGrom got the start for the Mets today and looked dominant over his first six batters. He struck out six-of-seven to begin the game but he started stumbling in the third though thanks to the vaunted offensive attack of Rafael Devers (who still has every chance to be good), Christian Vasquez, and Brock Holt. Holt delivered the big blow with a two-run homer.
DeGrom was able to regain himself though and worked around a leadoff walk in the fourth inning. He had a relatively easy time in the fifth and sixth innings as well. In the seventh, Jackie Bradley Jr. singled with one out in the inning, but deGrom struck out Devers and got Vasquez to fly out and end his day. His final line was: 7 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, BB, 12 K.
DeGrom also reached the 250 strikeout plateau for the second consecutive season, the only other Mets to do it were Tom Seaver and Dwight Gooden. His ERA went up from 1.71 to 1.79.
Seth Lugo pitched the eighth and gave up a double to the first batter he faced. He let the runner score eventually and wound up giving up the deciding run.
Offense
The Mets did not do a whole bunch against Chris Sale but got to work in the sixth inning.
Austin Jackson singled and Amed Rosario followed with a double. Wilmer Flores drove in Jackson with a sacrifice fly and Michael Conforto doubled home Rosario.
In the seventh inning, Jay Bruce walked to lead off the inning and Brandon Nimmo got hit by a pitch. With two-outs, Amed Rosario tied the game with an RBI single. He had two hits on the day, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto also reached base twice.
On Deck
The Mets head to Philadelphia tomorrow to start a three-game series against the division-rival Phillies. Zack Wheeler (11-7, 3.23 ERA) takes the mound for New York against Jake Arrieta (10-9, 3.66 ERA). The game starts at 7:10 p.m. and airs on SNY.
