After a 3-8 road trip, the Mets’ fortunes did not improve tonight at Citi Field. The Mets fell behind early and were unable to muster a comeback during their 6-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Pitching

While Jacob deGrom wasn’t at his sharpest, he delivered a quality outing with six innings of three-run ball. He also struck out seven batters while walking two.

Atlanta struck early against the Mets’ ace with a two-run shot from Austin Riley in the second inning. The Braves tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly by Josh Donaldson in the third.

DeGrom settled down the rest of the way, holding the Braves scoreless over his final three innings of work.

However, he Mets’ bullpen woes continued as Robert Gsellman yielded three runs in the eighth inning to extend Atlanta’s lead to 6-2.

Offense

Pete Alonso continued his incredible rookie season with another excellent night at the plate. He crushed a solo homerun off Mike Soroka in the third inning to put the Mets on the board. It was Alonso’s 28th homerun of the season, and his two hit effort raised his batting average to .280 and OPS to 1.001.

The Mets had a chance to breakthrough in the seventh inning, but former Met Anthony Swarzak squashed their rally. After Tomas Nido drove in Todd Frazier to make the score 3-2, Swarzak ended the Mets hope of a comeback by getting Jeff McNeil and Alonso out to end the inning.

The Mets were not able to add any more runs over the final two inings.

On Deck

The Mets will look to get back into the win column tomorrow night in game two of the series. Steven Matz will take on Julio Teheran at 4:10 p.m.
