The New York Mets (33-36) were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals (35-33) on Friday night at Citi Field by the score of 9-5.

Pitching

Steven Matz started against the St. Louis Cardinals went six innings tonight, gave up four runs (three earned), three hits, and struck out six batters.

Robert Gsellman pitched a scoreless seventh inning, only allowing one hit.

After the Mets came back and lead 5-4 into the eighth inning, Jeurys Familia was called from the bullpen. Familia had completely no command with his pitches tonight and ended up allowing a tying home run to Mets killer Paul DeJong to make it 5-5. Then shortly after, switch hitter Dexter Fowler hit a no-doubt go-ahead three-run homer to give the Cardinals a 8-5 lead.

Hector Santiago came in to pitch in an inning of relief in the ninth, which wasn’t so successful allowing a solo homer to infielder Kolten Wong to give the Cardinals a four-run cushion.

The New York Mets bullpen lead the majors with 15 blown saves this year.

Offense

Todd Frazier gave the Mets a 1-0 lead with a base hit up the middle in the first, Alonso came around to score.

In the bottom of the fifth, Steven Matz cut the deficit providing a little offensive boost with a solo home run over the left field seats with the score now being 4-2.

A fielder’s choice off the bat of Pete Alonso scored a run in the seventh inning to bring the game to 4-3.

Two batters later, Wilson Ramos gets a first pitch fastball and rips it into right field for a base hit which brought in the tying and go-ahead runs to give Mets a 5-4 lead.

The Mets bats were quiet for the rest of the game after falling behind three runs in the eighth. Alonso was on base three times and Jeff McNeil had two hits. Matz had two hits of his own.

The Mets will look to get the next two games against the Cards starting tomorrow with Noah Syndergaard on the mound. Thor will look to build off the excellent start he had against the Colorado Rockies last time out Game time will be at 7:10 p.m. ET.
