The New York Mets (24-21) lost to the Miami Marlins (19-30) by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night at Citi Field in the rubber game of the teams’ three-game series.
Pitching
Jacob deGrom (4-0, 1.54 ERA) took the mound for the Mets in pursuit of yet another strong start. He provided exactly that as he delivered his sixth quality start of the season for the Mets.
The 29-year-old pitched seven shutout innings. He gave up four hits, hit two batters and gave up two walks while striking out eight Marlins. The Marlins’ biggest threat against deGrom came in the fourth when they had runners at first and third with two outs, but even that wasn’t enough to score against deGrom.
Seth Lugo was called upon to pitch the eighth and he responded with a scoreless inning, which lowered his ERA to 1.84.
Jeurys Familia came on in the ninth for a save chance. He blew the save after J.T. Realmuto drove in the tying run on an RBI single. He then proceeded to give up the lead on a Starlin Castro RBI single.
Offense
As deGrom was stifling the Marlins’ offense, Dan Straily (2-0, 3.12 ERA) was doing the same to the Mets’ offense. For the first four innings, the Mets were held to no runs, three walks, and two hits.
Brandon Nimmo broke a scoreless game with a solo home run to right field in the fifth.
The Mets did not score any more runs after the homer and were limited to a total of one run, three walks and six hits on the night.
Nimmo and Adrian Gonzalez were the only Mets with multi-hit games. Nimmo went 2-for-3 with a run, walk and RBI, while Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a walk.
On Deck
The Mets go back on the road as they travel to Wisconsin to play the first-place Milwaukee Brewers (31-19) on Thursday night. Steven Matz (1-3, 4.42 ERA) will toe the rubber against Zach Davies (2-3, 4.24 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 8:10 p.m. EDT. The game can be watched on SNY and heard on 710 WOR.
