The Mets pulled off a great comeback win against the Yankees. (Box Score)

Pitching

The Mets threw Zack Wheeler out on the mound for the first of his many trade auditions.

In the first, Wheeler struck out DJ LeMahieu to begin the game. He proceeded to walk Aaron Judge but struck out Aaron Hicks and got Gary Sanchez to hit into a force out.

The second is where the Yankees did their damage for the game. Didi Gregorius and Edwin Encarnacion both singled to put men on for Gleyber Torres. The Mets got a ground ball from Brett Gardner but could not turn the double play. James Paxton proceeded to bunt home a run due to Wilson Ramos and Wheeler both going for the ball and neither covering home.

Wheeler pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the third including striking out Hicks and Sanchez. The fourth was also smooth and he got Edwin Encarnacion swinging.

In the fifth, Brett Gardner singled to lead off the inning and went to second on a bunt but Wheeler go LeMahieu to ground out and got Judge to strikeout.

Aaron Hicks led off the sixth with a double but Wheeler got Sanchez, Gregorius, and Encarnacion to hit into three quick outs. Despite his pitch count being at 109, Wheeler stayed in to face Gleyber Torres in the seventh inning. Wheeler rewarded the person who asked him to stay out there by striking out Torres. His final line was: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, 8 K.

Justin Wilson, the man who has been out since April, came in for Wheeler. He retired the only two guys he faced.

Seth Lugo came in for the eighth inning. He had been struggling a bit so it was nice to see him retire the side in 1-2-3 fashion.

Edwin Diaz came in to try and lock down the ninth. Gregorius reached on an infield hit to first base. He came back to strikeout Encarnacion and got Torres to fly out to center. Gergorius stole second but it was close enough that the Mets challenged. They did not win it but Diaz struck out Gardner to end the game.

Offense

The Mets had their chances against James Paxton in this one. Jeff McNeil singled to begin the first inning but was caught stealing. So that threat ended pretty quickly.

In the second, the Mets got two on courtesy of singles from Todd Frazier and Robinson Cano. They could not cash it in thanks in large part to Gleyber Torres’ slick ending inning double play. They had two more on in the third thanks to a hit from Amed Rosario and a walk to Pete Alonso.

The Mets got two on in the fifth thanks to hits from Rosario and McNeil but Paxton got Alonso to strikeout and ended that threat.

The sixth is when the Mets began their comeback. J.D. Davis hit a homer to right field off Paxton to make it a 2-1 game.

Problem is, they had to go up against the vaunted Yankees bullpen. The Mets also remembered that June is over and they went to work.

Adam Ottavino came on for the eighth inning and it did not go very well (for the Yankees that is). Alonso led off the inning by reaching on an error. J.D. Davis came up and fell behind 0-2 but battled back to make the count full. He proceeded to double into the left center gap and Alonso scored all the way from first. With Davis on second and one-out, the Yankees opted to walk Robinson Cano for some reason.

Wilson Ramos laced in front of Gardner but the Mets played it safe and did not send the runner.

It was bases loaded and one-out for Conforto, who was having a night at the plate. The Yankees pulled Ottavino for Zack Britton. Conforto put everything past him and doubled into left field to give the Mets a 4-2 lead.

Tomorrow

Jason Vargas takes the ball tomorrow night as the Mets go for the Subway Series win.
