The New York Mets won their second game in a row on Saturday, beating the Phillies, 6-3, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, putting their six-game losing streak even further in the rear-view and moving back within four games of the second NL wild-card spot (Box Score).

Wilson Ramos continued his torrid stretch, going 4-for-5 with an RBI — his eighth career four-hit game — and extending his 2019 MLB-best hit-streak to 24 games.

Michael Conforto went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Amed Rosario collected two hits, Joe Panik contributed a two-RBI double, and Todd Frazier went 3-for-4 with two RBIs — his third multi-hit game over his last four contests.

Left-hander Steven Matz allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, striking out six and walking one over five-plus innings of work. Over his last five starts (30 innings), the 28-year-old owns a 2.10 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 31 strikeouts and seven walks.

The Mets’ bullpen combined for four scoreless to secure Matz’ ninth win of the season.

Pitching

Jean Segura drove a leadoff opposite-field triple over Michael Conforto‘s head in the first and scored on Bryce Harper‘s RBI groundout to tie the game at one, starting Steven Matz‘ day on a bit of a sour note, but the 28-year-old southpaw would rebound.

Matz worked around three baserunners from the second through fifth innings, appearing to be in cruise control heading into the sixth at 73 pitches.

Harper led off the frame with a homer to left-center, cutting the Mets’ lead to 5-2, Logan Morrison reached on Panik’s fielding error at second and Dickerson flared a single into shallow right, bringing Kingery to the plate as the tying run, who singled to load the bases with none out, ending Matz’ outing after five-plus innings.

Left-hander Luis Avilan entered and retired Hernandez, who hit a screamer into a leaping Frazier’s glove at third but walked pinch-hitter Andrew Knapp (.198 batting average this season) to make it a 5-3 game. Though, he bounced back to induce a 4-6-3 double play via Haseley, escaping the jam.

If not for Conforto keeping Kingery’s hit in front of him earlier in the frame and Frazier’s leaping, run-saving stab on Hernandez’ liner, Steven Matz’ day could have turned out a lot differently.

Jeurys Familia allowed a leadoff, off-the-wall double to Segura in the seventh and struck out J.T. Realmuto on three consecutive sliders before Mickey Callaway called on Justin Wilson, who retired Harper (flyout) and Morrison (swinging strikeout; 96 MPH four-seam) to preserve the two-run lead.

Seth Lugo navigated around a one-out single (Kingery) in the eighth, striking out two, then struck out Haseley and Segura in a perfect ninth, securing his fourth save of the season.

Offense

Amed Rosario led off the game with a base hit off Jason Vargas and Pete Alonso followed with a walk to put the Mets in a great position to strike early. J.D. Davis went down swinging at a mid-80s four-seamer, but Wilson Ramos took advantage of the meatballs Vargas was serving, extending his hit streak to 24 games with a bloop RBI single and staking the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Matz lined a two-out single in the second — his twelfth hit of the season, tying Jacob deGrom for the team lead among pitchers — and Rosario followed with a base hit, but Alonso sent a Vargas knuckle-curve to the warning track in right, ending the threat.

Davis (walk) and Ramos (infield hit off Segura’s glove at shortstop) reached to start the third and Conforto made the Phils pay with an RBI double down the first-base line to put the Mets ahead, 2-1.

Frazier was hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out in the next at-bat, but Panik struck out, Juan Lagares grounded into a fielder’s choice (Ramos out at home), and Matz flew out, wasting a golden opportunity. The Mets didn’t let the next one slip away.

Ramos collected his third hit of the game with a leadoff single in the fifth. After Conforto walked, Frazier laced an RBI double into the corner in left field, extending the Mets’ lead to 3-1. Panik then smoked a two-run double down the right-field line to make it a 5-1 game, ending Vargas’ evening after four-plus innings of work.

Frazier singled with one out in the seventh, advancing to second on Ranger Suarez‘ two-out balk, and Rajai Davis reached on Segura’s second error of the game to start the eighth, but nothing materialized in either case.

After Ramos doubled over Harper’s head in right field to lead off the ninth and Conforto followed with a base hit to put Mets on the corners, Frazier singled to make it a 6-3 game, affording the Mets a much-needed insurance run.
