The New York Mets (27-28) experienced a ninth-inning collapse to the Los Angeles Dodgers (35-19), losing 9-8 at Dodgers Stadium on Wednesday night.

Pitching

Noah Syndergaard (3-4, 4.90 ERA) toed the rubber against the Dodgers on Wednesday as he looked to rebound from his previous start in which he allowed 10 hits, one walk and six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Thor did not have his best stuff, but ended up battling through six innings and recording a quality start. In 116 pitches, the 26-year-old allowed seven hits, two walks and three runs, while striking out five.

Syndergaard’s biggest struggles came in the third when he gave up back-to-back-to-back doubles; the latter two of which were run-scoring hits.

Robert Gsellman relieved Syndergaard in the seventh. He gave up a RBI single to former Met Justin Turner before completing his one inning of work.

Jeurys Familia came into the game in the eighth inning and struggled right off the bat. Familia was greeted by a leadoff home run by Corey Seager to cut the Mets lead to 8-5.

Edwin Diaz entered the game for a save situation in the ninth with an 8-5 lead. Diaz struggled mightily and could not record an out. He started off the inning by giving up back-to-back homers to Joc Pederson and Max Muncy. He then allowed a double to Turner, a RBI double to Cody Bellinger, an intentional walk to Seager, and a single to Matt Beaty to load the bases with no outs and the winning run on third. Finally, he gave up the winning run on a sac fly by Alex Verdugo.

Offense

The Mets offense faced Walker Buehler (5-1, 4.03 ERA) to start the game and got off to a quick start. After Amed Rosario grounded out in the leadoff spot, Dominic Smith reached base on a single and Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer.

Todd Frazier started off the second inning by lining a single to center field. Following a Carlos Gomez strikeout, Adeiny Hechavarria drove in Frazier off a double to left field to give the Mets a 3-0 lead.

With the game tied up at 3-3 in the fifth, Smith and Alonso replicated what they did in the first inning as Smith singled and Alonso hit another two-run homer. The home run was the rookie’s 19th of the season.

The Mets tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Hechavarria hit a RBI single to drive in Frazier, who led off the inning with a double.

Rosario and Smith displayed their power in the seventh inning as they hit back-to-back solo home runs to start the inning and give the Mets an 8-3 lead.

Smith and Alonso both ended their nights with three hits apiece. Smith finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a home run and a RBI. Alonso, on the other hand, finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two home runs and four RBIs.
