The New York Mets (19-18) drop the series finale of their rain-shortened series at Citizen’s Bank Park with the Philadelphia Phillies (23-16) by a score of 4-2.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom started this one for the Mets and it was certainly not his most efficient outing. He walked Cesar Hernandez on seven pitches, Aaron Alther on eight, and Odubel Hererra on nine. With the bases loaded and no-one out, deGrom battled back to strikeout Rhys Hoskins, got a fielders choice on Carlos Santana at home, and struck out Maikel Franco. It took, 45 pitches, but deGrom held the Phillies to no runs.

Because he is coming off an injury, the Mets made the decision to not allow deGrom to continue pitching. Robert Gsellman came into the game to relieve Jacob and did his job. He went three scoreless innings in the game despite allowing five baserunners.

Paul Sewald relieved Gsellman and he pitched a scoreless fifth inning, but had issues in the sixth inning. He gave up a double to Santana to begin the sixth and he later walked Scott Kingery. He looked like he was about to squirm out of the jam but Nick Williams homered off Sewald to give the Phillies a 3-1 lead. The decision to use Sewald there instead of a warmed up Jerry Blevins will be heavily discussed but Sewald has been good against lefties all year.

AJ Ramos pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the Mets. He has been much better lately for the Mets.

Jeurys Familia came into the game during the eighth inning because the Mets had gone through so much of the bullpen already. Familia gave up a home run to Carlos Santana in the eighth.

Offense

The Mets had their share of chances in this one. Brandon Nimmo got on base four times while Asdrubal Cabrera reached base twice with two hits. Yoenis Cespedes and Adrian Gonzalez each reached base twice and Cespedes also added a home run. They just could not string anything together consistently.

The Mets first run came in the sixth inning courtesy of a Yoenis Cespedes home run. An inning later, Asdrubal Cabrera doubled home Brandon Nimmo and barely missed a two-run home run in the process.

The Mets ultimately left eight runners on base in this one.

On Deck

The team will have a day off tomorrow, but the Mets will head back home and welcome the Toronto Blue Jays to town on Tuesday night. The Mets will send Noah Syndergaard to the mound to take on Jaime Garcia.
