The New York Mets (13-5) defeated the Atlanta Braves (11-7) by a score of 5-3 in 12 innings on Friday night at SunTrust Park in Atlanta.

Pitching

With one out in the bottom of the first, Ozzie Albies jumped on a first pitch 100 MPH fastball from Noah Syndergaard and put it over the right field fence, giving the Braves an early 1-0 lead.

After a pair of singles from Preston Tucker and Ryan Flaherty, Syndergaard struck out Sean Newcomb, stranding the runners on the corners in a scoreless second.

Ender Inciarte led off the third with a single, he advanced to second on a ground out. Inciarte took advantage of the Mets lack of holding runners on, as he stole third base with two outs. However, Syndergaard stranded him there, keeping the 2-1 Mets lead.

Syndergaard should have escaped the fourth inning unharmed, however Jay Bruce misplayed a line drive into an RBI double, cutting the Mets lead to 3-2.

Syndergaard struck out both Albies and Freddie Freeman in a 1-2-3 fifth inning.

The Braves evened things up in the sixth. Nick Markakis led off the inning with a double, he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kurt Suzuki then drove him home with a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 3-3.

Syndergaard struck out Dansby Swanson to end the sixth inning, and his outing. He pitched much better than his final line shows: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K on 103 pitches.

Seth Lugo issued a leadoff walk in both the seventh and eighth. However, in both innings Tomas Nido bailed him out. In the seventh a strike him out, throw him out double play erased Flaherty.

In the eighth, Nido gunned down Albies after a pitch out. These were the first two base runners caught stealing for Mets catchers this season.

AJ Ramos needed only 11 pitches, and struck out both Tucker and Swanson in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Robert Gsellman struck out Flaherty in a perfect tenth inning. He issued a two out walk to Markakis and allowed a single to Suzuki before striking out Tucker to get out of trouble in the eleventh.

Jeurys Familia secured his eighth save of the season with a 1-2-3 twelfth inning. He has yet give up a run this year.

Hitting

The Mets struck for a pair of runs in the top of the third. Tomas Nido led off the inning with an excellent at-bat, singling on the tenth pitch.

Two batters later, he scored from first to tie the game as Amed Rosario doubled over the head of centerfielder Ender Inciarte, Rosario advanced to third on a throwing error. The Mets then took a 2-1 lead, as Michael Conforto drove Rosario home with a sacrifice fly.

The Mets tacked on another run in the top of the fourth. Todd Frazier drew a one out walk, and after getting a great jump he stole second. Lefty killer Wilmer Flores then drove him home with an RBI single, making it 3-1.

Amed Rosario picked up his second double of the game with two outs in the fifth. However, after a Conforto walk Yoenis Cespedes struck out looking to strand the runners at first and second.

In the sixth, Flores lined a two out single, his second hit of the game. Jay Bruce then snapped an 0-for-19 skid with a bloop double, however Flores was thrown out in a play at the plate.

The red hot Asdrubal Cabrera picked up a one out double in the eighth, he advanced to third on a wild pitch. He was stranded there after Frazier popped out and Flores flew out.

The Mets waisted a big chance in the top of the eleventh. After Cabrera drew a leadoff walk, and Frazier reached on a Freeman fielding error, they were set up with two on and none out. However, both were stranded there as Flores popped out, Bruce flew out, and Nido struck out to end the inning.

Hitting for himself in the twelfth, Gsellman was hit by a pitch. Rosario then was able to get a bunt down and sacrificed him over to second. After Conforto flew out, Cespedes came through with a go-ahead RBI single giving the Mets a 4-3 lead.

Cabrera then provided some insurance, making it 5-3, as he doubled home Cespedes. Cabrera went 2-for-5 on the night with a pair of doubles and is hitting .343 this season.

Despite picking up the game winning hit, Cespedes wore the dreaded “golden sombrero,” going 1-for-5 with four strikeouts.
