The Mets lost the first game of their series, 5-1, to the Cubs on Thursday night at Citi Field.
Pitching
Seth Lugo started for the Mets and pitched four scoreless innings. His fastball velocity was higher than it was as a starter in 2017 which was certainly a new development.
He pitched around some trouble in the third and ended his outing with 60 pitches. He went four innings, gave up three hits, no walks, and three strikeouts.
Hansel Robles pitched the fifth and had a runner on first with two-out but proceeded to give up a tape measure homer to Ben Zobrist. Yes, he also pointed.
Jerry Blevins pitched the sixth and gave up a run in the process. He has yet to find his way.
Buddy Baumann pitched the seventh but gave up a run while recording just two outs and left with the bases loaded.
Scott Copeland relieved him and gave up no runs in 1.1 innings and stranded three runners.
Gerson Bautista had the ninth and it still does not appear he has found his footing in the bigs. He did throw his first triple digit fastball.
Offense
There was not much offense from anyone sans Brandon Nimmo. The Mets had their best chance in the third when the had the bases loaded and one-out but Jose Bautista struck out and Michael Conforto grounded out.
Brandon Nimmo went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer. His first homer off the lefty and he has already set a career high in homers.
He is hitting .287/.431/.574 with a 179 wRC+ this season. In other words, pretty good.
On Deck
Zack Wheeler will get the start tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m. against Tyler Chatwood for the Cubs.
