The New York Mets (25-23) were defeated by the Milwaukee Brewers (33-20) today 17-6.

The Mets offense wasn’t the issue this time in today’s game, it was totally the opposite. Vargas and the Mets bullpen could not hold down the lead giving up a season-high of 17 runs and 19 hits.

Pitching:

Jason Vargas struggled in his start against the Brewers this afternoon. The Mets offense gave Vargas a 3-0 lead to work with but he couldn’t hold the lead. Vargas gave up five earned runs in three innings, striking out five, and walking two.

Jacob Rhame came in the fourth inning to relieve Vargas. Rhame gave up two earned runs which brought two more runs in to give the Brewers a 7-5 lead.

AJ Ramos came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth as he tried to retaliate from his heart-wrenching performance the night before, but his woes continued.

Ramos got the first two outs of the inning but couldn’t get that last elusive out because of a solo home run by journeyman catcher Erik Kratz and a two-run double by former Marlin Christian Yelich.

Chris Flexen pitched two innings and gave up four earned runs and walked three.

Jerry Blevins came in the seventh and finally got the last out of that seven run inning by the Brewers. Also, Blevins pitched a clean eighth inning.

Offense:

In the top of the first inning, Wilmer Flores singled to right field on a soft pop up to second baseman Hernan Perez which brought in Brandon Nimmo to score the first run of the game.

Devin Mesoraco singled in the second run of the game to make it a 2-0 lead.

Jose Reyes walked in a run to make it a 3-run first inning. Reyes drove in his second run of the game in the fifth  by doubling down the left field line to bring in Adrian Gonzalez for the fifth Mets run of the game.

In the top of the second, Brandon Nimmo took the lead right back on the first pitch thrown by Chase Anderson with a solo home run to make it a 4-3 lead.

Michael Conforto added insurance in the third by tacking on another run by hitting his sixth home run of the year to give the Mets a two-run cushion.

On Deck:

The New York Mets will play the finale of the 4-game series against the Brew Crew tomorrow. Zack Wheeler will be starting on the mound versus the right-hander Jhoulys Chacin.

The Mets will be looking to get a split and avoid a series loss. Game time will be at 1:10 pm EST on Pix 11.
