Drew Gagnon started for the Mets last night to make his long-awaited MLB debut at the age of 28.
The right-hander started off his major league career with a strikeout of Cesar Hernandez and got through a 1-2-3 first inning.
However, things quickly went south for him in the second as he allowed a single and a hit-by-pitch and then allowed Maikel Franco to hit a three-run blast to left field to put the Phillies up 3-0.
Things only got worse for Gagnon in the third inning as he allowed back-to-back one-out singles to Rhys Hoskins and Odubel Herrera followed by a Carlos Santana walk to load the bases. Nick Williams then drove in the first two with an RBI single to give the Phillies a 5-0 lead.
It could have got even more troublesome for him, though, as Wilmer Flores made a double play by catching a ball over the shoulder hit by Scott Kingery, and then fired home to throw out Carlos Santana, who advanced to third base earlier in the at-bat on a wild pitch.
There was a bright spot to Gagnon’s day and that moment happened in the fourth inning as he recorded his first career RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Amed Rosario.
Gagnon would get through a clean fourth inning, despite hitting Jorge Alfaro for his second HBP of the night.
After striking out Rhys Hoskins in the fifth, Gagnon fell back again as he allowed a solo shot to Odubel Herrera. He then proceeded to strike out Carlos Santana before allowing a single to Nick Williams, which prompted Mickey Callaway to replace him with Tyler Bashlor.
On the night, Gagnon lasted 4 2/3 innings while allowing six runs, seven hits, and one walk to go along with three strikeouts. The team likely will not use Gagnon again and he almost certainly will get replaced on the roster for another bullpen arm.
