Frank Francisco has never been of a soft-spoken ilk, and last night he continued that trend, calling out the New York Yankees following the Mets 4-3 win over the Orioles in which Francisco walked in a run and nearly blew the game. Here’s the quote from Mike Puma’s column today from this morning’s New York Post:
“I can’t wait to face those chickens,” Mets closer Frank Francisco told The Post when asked about playing the Yankees in this weekend’s Subway Series at Citi Field. “I want to strike out the side against them. I’ve done it before.”
“I think I’ve said too much already,” he said.
Francisco did strike out three Bronx Bombers in order once prior, in 2004 as a reliever for the Texas Rangers, punching out Jeter, A-Rod and Giambi in the seventh inning of a game in which Buck Showalter’s Rangers beat the Yankees 9-7.
I liked seeing some fire out of a Met player for once through the media. We really haven’t seen this since Johan Santana proclaimed he was the “beast of the NL East” prior to the 2010 season. However, I do agree with Terry Collins when he stated said that he is putting added pressure on himself in this series; and I’m not so sure Francisco minds that, but he better put his $12 million dollars where his mouth is.
It should be interesting to see how this plays out and if Francisco tosses up a 3-K goose egg, or ends up with yolk all over his face.
Punching out the side nine pitches anyone? Hey. I can dream can’t I?
