So far this offseason, the Mets have been linked to several free-agent closers including Joe Nathan, Matt Capps, Frank Francisco, and Jonathan Broxton. The team has also been linked to one player who, in my opinion, probably makes the most sense for the Mets. Francisco Cordero.
Cordero, who was with the Reds in 2011, saved 37 games, won 5 games, and had a 2.45 ERA in 68 appearances.
Out of the list of potential closers for the Mets, Cordero makes sense mainly because he has the stuff to be a great closer and that he would sign on a 1-year contract.
Matt Capps and Frank Francisco have experience in closing, but in my opinion they are more like middle-relievers. I don’t think this team needs another middle-reliever closing out games.
Brad Lidge is yet another interesting guy to look at, but he is a risk because of the injuries he has had over his career.
Many say that because Cordero is going to turn 37, there is a concern that he will not be as durable as other closers currently on the market. It doesn’t bother me considering that he can still produce numbers like he did in 2011.
If Francisco Cordero signs with the Mets, I won’t be surprised in the very least. We’ll just have to see what road the Mets take with finding the “right” closer.
