As of Sunday, June 30, the Mets are back 13 games from first place in the National League East.

Barring a miracle, it will be the team’s third consecutive season missing the playoffs and being sellers at the trade deadline.

The Mets has several players that will be appealing to team’s attempting to make a playoff run or team’s that are looking to shore up their roster for the push.

Let’s take a look at who could be on the chopping block.

Zack Wheeler

While Zack Wheeler in 2019 hasn’t honed in on the dominance we saw from him in the second half of 2018, the right-hander has still been a serviceable starter for the Mets in his contract year.

The 29-year-old is 6-5 with a 4.51 ERA, 3.75 FIP, 1.263 WHIP and and 9.6 K/9 over 17 starts (107.2 IP). Wheeler has also been good for 1.7 bWAR.

A team looking to bolster the back end of their rotation could be interested in Wheeler.

While making roughly $6 million this year, a team wouldn’t have to break the bank for him either for the rest of the year. If the Mets choose not to go the route of a salary dump, they could perhaps pick up a couple players from a team’s top 30 for Wheeler, or maybe even a Top 100 prospect.

Jason Vargas

Jason Vargas, 36, has more or less been the Mets’ most consistent starter in 2019.

After starting off the season on the wrong foot, the southpaw has rebounded to give the team stability at the back end of the rotation.

In 14 games pitched (13 started), Vargas owns a 3.66 ERA, 4.34 FIP, 1.281 WHIP and and 7.7 K/9 in 66.1 innings pitched. He has also been worth 1.1 bWAR.

Vargas is earning $8 million this year and has a club option for 2020 with a $2 million buyout.

Like Wheeler, Vargas could be appealing to a team looking for starting reinforcements for the stretch run. But unlike Wheeler, the club option with the buyout for 2020 could also make him sought after.

Juan Lagares

Juan Lagares, 30, signed a five-year contract extension with the Mets that kicked in in 2015 and ends this year.

After a Gold Glove campaign in 2014 and a full 2015 season, Lagares was plagued with injuries in the next three seasons that followed.

Finally healthy again this year, Lagares has not been the player he once was and has been a negative at the dish and, surprisingly, in the field.

In 152 plate appearances in 2019, Lagares owns just a .182/.252/.263 triple slash to go along with two homers and 15 RBI.

Alarmingly, his defense has also slipped precipitously, as he has -5 DRS in the field and a -3.1 UZR.

In his walk year, Lagares hasn’t proved he can be the player he once was, but he will almost assuredly be shopped around prior to the July 31 deadline.

The only question is what the team could really get for him. If he does get traded, it will likely be as a straight salary dump, or for some low-level minor leaguers.

Todd Frazier

Toms River, New Jersey native Todd Frazier has been one of the Mets’ most consistent offensive contributors so far in 2019.

The 33-year-old in his second year of a two-year deal signed prior to the 2018 season, has bounced back after a rough year one of his deal.

In 60 games (224 plate appearances), Frazier has clubbed 10 home runs and owns a slash line of .251/.335/.442.

Frazier, who is not part of the long term plan for the Mets, will likely be shipped away in the next month.

A team who needs reinforcements at third base, first base or as a designated hitter could pick up Frazier to bolster their lineup.

Unless the Mets pull off a miracle like their 1969 counterparts, 2019 will be yet another year with no playoffs for New York despite lofty expectations.

In addition to the four players above who are likely to be shipped off, the team could also float around the possibility of trading starter Noah Syndergaard, catcher Wilson Ramos and maybe even southpaw Steven Matz.

Regardless, the next month will be interesting to see if the Mets get anything of value or just choose to shed salary again.
