It happened two years ago today.

I still get goosebumps whenever I think about it… It’s one of those memories you hold onto for dear life when you’re a Mets fan, because there’s only such a precious few of them to draw from.

After losing the first two games of the 2015 World Series to the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, things looked pretty bleak for our New York Mets as the contest headed to Flushing, Queens for a critical Game 3 matchup.

The atmosphere was electric as the largest crowd in Citi Field history came donned in their orange and blue, ready to see their team battle back from a two game deficit.

A young Noah Syndergaard provided the initial spark the Amazins’ needed when he fired a high-and-tight fastball that knocked Royals leadoff man Alcides Escobar to the ground, as the crowd roared with approval while the Kansas City bench was left fuming and shouting obscenities.

But it was David Wright that had everyone in a frenzy, when he crushed a two-run homer into the left field seats in the first inning to put the Mets up 2-1, and give us all a much needed glimmer of hope.

Even the dugout exploded with emotion as the captain rounded the bases in a scene that was reminiscent of some of those raucous moments at Shea Stadium when the thunderous applause would shake the foundation to its depths.

Coming back from a devastating spinal stenosis diagnosis earlier in the season, it felt so emotionally gratifying to see a charged up David Wright soak it all in after all the pain and suffering he had endured that season. But Wright wasn’t done yet.

After the Royals recaptured the lead, the Mets battled back with at two-run homer by outfielder Curtis Granderson in the third. Then with the bases loaded in the sixth, Wright ripped a single to center field to score two more runs and break the game wide open en route to a rousing 9-3 victory.

“Incredible! Incredible!” an ecstatic Wright exclaimed after the game. “To be able to fight back the way that we did, we were relentless tonight! And it seemed like every time they had an answer, we had an answer right back. That’s the type of baseball that got us here.”

It was a memorable moment for Wright, a great moment for the team, and an incredible moment for the fans.

We didn’t know it at the time, but it would be the only game the Mets would win in the 2015 World Series. Still, for that one special night it was pure magic…

It felt like the momentum had shifted and the Mets were going to pull off yet another improbable postseason comeback. A comeback spearheaded by No. 5 – David Wright.

But alas… It wasn’t meant to be.
