Wilmer Flores continued his hot streak on Saturday in Milwaukee as the third baseman went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.
On the year, Flores has strangely had reverse splits, though, as his slash line against right-handers moved up to .308/.378/.523 with all three of his home runs coming off same-handed pitchers as well.
Meanwhile, he has only hit .174/.250/.239 off southpaws.
Despite his label as a lefty-masher, the stats have started to show that he is not much better against lefties (.264) for his career than he is against righties (.256 average). However, his power for much of his career has come at a higher rate for the former (25 homers in 439 at-bats) than the latter (35 homers in 1,147) at-bats.
With all three of his homers this season coming off same-handed pitchers, maybe those power numbers might start evening out as well, thereby effectively allowing him to shed the label of being the lefty-masher many, including myself at one point, thought he was.
Whatever the case, though, Flores has really been taking advantage of his chance to start regularly with Todd Frazier on the disabled list.
Over the last week, Flores is 7-for-21 (.333) and has been hitting third in a lineup that has been desperate for offense for the last few weeks.
Wilmer Flores has gone 38 straight PAs without a strikeout, the longest current streak in the majors & is the longest since Flores went when a career-high 42 plate appearances without a strikeout since August 26-September 8, 2014.
After hitting .184/.273/.347 with two home runs and five RBI in the month of April, Flores has followed that up with a .300/.362/.450 slash line with one homer and eight RBI in May.
While Frazier is expected to return soon from a strained left hamstring, Flores will continue to get playing time, in all likelihood, if he continues to produce at this level.
With the ability to play every infield position, although preferably not shortstop, there is no reason the team could not shift him around and allow him to spot people at each position. Mickey Callaway has even recently hinted that Flores might be able to play the outfield, which would open up even more opportunities for him.
