The New York Mets announced they have designated right-handed reliever Fernando Salas for assignment.

His roster spot will be taken by first base prospect Dominic Smith that will join the team on Friday.

Salas struggled mightily for the Mets in 2017 with a 6.00 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and career worst 12.0 H/9 in 45 innings this year.

The veteran returned to the Mets this offseason on a one-year, three million dollar deal after being lights out down the stretch in 2016.

Salas was acquired by the Mets last August from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for pitching prospect Erik Manoah.
