The 2020 MLB season may have only been sixty games long. The Mets may have gone 26-34. They may have still not even made it into the playoffs, despite it being expanded. There may not have been fans allowed in the stadium.
The 2020 season will forever go down in Mets history, but not just because of all those reasons. It will go down in history as being a win for Mets fans and the organization as a whole.
And this is all because of the change of ownership from the Wilpons to Steve Cohen.
Cohen became owner of the Mets after their 2020 season came to a close, but it is what the 2020 season will be remembered for.
This ownership change is one that Mets fans had been waiting for for decades, some even in their entire lives. In a year of unprecedented times, in a year of loss, in a year of fear, and in a year of pain, it was the positivity — and the hope — that Mets fans needed. It is a change they are going to remember for years to come; for their entire lives. When they think of the year 2020 in the future, they will remember all the negative happening in the world, but in terms of baseball, a smile will likely come to their faces.
Steve Cohen has already made an impact in 2020, despite not being owner during the season. He brought back Sandy Alderson, made big changes to the front office (such as hiring Jared Porter as GM), created a Twitter account to have better access to the fans, he made some big signings, fillings holes at catcher with James McCann and in the bullpen with Trevor May (who even stated that Cohen’s accessibility and ownership had an impact into his signing), and he showed up to Citi Field to greet season ticket holders while they were picking up their bobbleheads.
Oh, and let’s not forget that he committed $2.85 million towards helping Citi Field workers.
That is just a glimpse at some of the things Cohen got accomplished in a short few months. Imagine what he can accomplish when he has even more time, like an entire season in front of him? The power of having a Mets fan, who cares about the organization and winning, as an owner.
The year 2020 was a horrific one, both in terms of baseball and not. But one thing from 2020 that can make Mets fans smile is that it marked the beginning of a new era, one filled with excitement, hope, spending, and consideration.
Despite 2020 being a loss year, it was a win for the Mets and Mets fans.
